Casa Oretani

Casa Oretani Exterior

We are delighted to offer our great value, reasonably priced self-catering accommodation, Casa Oretani, which comprises of a comfortable house with 4 bedrooms capable of accommodating 8 people. For children there is a sofa bed and we can provide a cot and high chair also. There is a 3x4m pool with a lounging area, and also a terrace with table and chairs for outdoor dining. We are currently in the process of building a barbecue which will be ready for the lovely spring and summer weather. The house has its own access through the converted garage, which can now be used as a communal space for meetings, exhibitions, lectures and slide shows. Parking is freely available and there is a park just across the road with a childrens playground, excercise machines, picnic tables and barbecue pits near the old Roman bridge across the local stream. Only a gentle 15 minute walk away, or 5 minute cycle, is the Guadiana River which offers some great opportunities for birdwatching, for example Marsh Harrier, Kestrel, Squacco Heron, Little Bittern and along the way Stone Curlew, Red-necked Nightjar, Buzzard and even Golden Eagle. A ten minute walk in the other direction is a place where the resident Eagle Owls can be found. From the house can be seen nesting White Storks and Griffon and Black Vultures flying from their mountain roosts.

The Bedrooms

The 4 comfortable bedrooms are all en-suite with solar heated hot water backed up by a renewable-energy aerothermic heat exchange system. There are 3 bedrooms with twin single beds and one with a double bed. The aerothermic system also provides energy efficient heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

The Living Area

The kitchen is equipped with an energy efficient electric cooker, fridge, microwave and all you need for your stay. The living area attached to the kitchen has a large dining table for family meals and then comfortables chairs and a sofa for relaxing with a glass of wine afterwards.

Garden Area

The living area opens out onto the sun-lounging area next to our seasonal pool to help you cool off and relax on those hot days. The garden is currently being prepared for the spring planting season after the frosty winter and will have a small vegetable patch, herb garden and native plants to attract bird life and insects such as butterflies.

The Village

The village of Picón, in the Montes Norte/Campo de Calatrava area, is 13km north west of Ciudad Real, Castilla la Mancha on the CM-412 road to Cabañeros National Park. The village is named after the original habitants, piconeros, who burned wood to make charcoal for cooking and heating and now has a population of 700. It is surrounded by hills just south of the Mountains of Toledo and boasts its own extinct volcano overlooking the village.

The village has two very pleasant main squares, the larger of which, the Plaza de España, has the 17th Century Town Hall, the Church of San Salvador and the Rollo de Justicia, a symbol of self rule and used in the past for punishments. Every Sunday in the Plaza de España there is a clothes and food market. The main town celebrations, or Fiestas, are between the 1st and 5th of May in honour of the Holy Cross, Easter Week processions, The Romeria of San Isidro Labrador on the 15th May and also a week of cultural activities around the the 27th July in honour of the towns patron saint, San Pantaleon. Other smaller festivals are the bonfires in many parts of town on the 7th and 12th of December.

There are a number of bars in the village serving tapas and in the warmer weather have terrazas to enjoy your drinks outside. There are also two restaurants, the most famous being the Arroceria de Picón serving the finest rice dishes outside of Valencia, if not the best in Spain.
