The Village

The village of Picón, in the Montes Norte/Campo de Calatrava area, is 13km north west of Ciudad Real, Castilla la Mancha on the CM-412 road to Cabañeros National Park. The village is named after the original habitants, piconeros, who burned wood to make charcoal for cooking and heating and now has a population of 700. It is surrounded by hills just south of the Mountains of Toledo and boasts its own extinct volcano overlooking the village.

The village has two very pleasant main squares, the larger of which, the Plaza de España, has the 17th Century Town Hall, the Church of San Salvador and the Rollo de Justicia, a symbol of self rule and used in the past for punishments. Every Sunday in the Plaza de España there is a clothes and food market. The main town celebrations, or Fiestas, are between the 1st and 5th of May in honour of the Holy Cross, Easter Week processions, The Romeria of San Isidro Labrador on the 15th May and also a week of cultural activities around the the 27th July in honour of the towns patron saint, San Pantaleon. Other smaller festivals are the bonfires in many parts of town on the 7th and 12th of December.

There are a number of bars in the village serving tapas and in the warmer weather have terrazas to enjoy your drinks outside. There are also two restaurants, the most famous being the Arroceria de Picón serving the finest rice dishes outside of Valencia, if not the best in Spain.
