The Cereal Hunters

Another regular summer visitor to our wildlife-rich region is the Montagu´s Harrier. This bird winters in Africa and returns here to breed. They prefer open plains, bogs, wastelands with arable fields and heathland with low bushes. Well, the land around Ciudad Real is perfect for them then. We have all of that.

The problem, though, is that they nest on the ground. Sometimes they nest in crops, but more often in reedbeds, grass and forestry plantations. At the moment farmers are already harvesting the cereals and some fields around the area are even baled. Hopefully this pair have their nest in a safe place and we´ll see some young about as the months go by.
